Lady Sylvanas was chosen by Vol’jin to lead the Horde after he met his demise.
It was plain to see that Sylvanas did not want to be warchief. She prefers the shadows, to stay hidden within Undercity in the Royal Quarters. Sylvanas was the first one to actually be able to break from Arthas grasp when the frozen throne cracked, shockingly enough, she gained her free will. This beautiful, yet dangerous banshee queen has a tragic tale of her own.
Who is Sylvanas?
Sylvanas has quite a few names, her most popular ones being the Dark Lady or the Banshee Queen. She is Warchief of the Horde and ruler of the Forsaken. She has made many mistakes, and up until recently the first female character to have made Warchief. She had a taste for revenge against Arthas for what he did to her.
After breaking free of Arthas, she went to the Alliance. The Alliance was the previous allies of her and her family. She made an attempt to convince the alliance that her and the undead no longer served the Lich King. She was turned away and refused by the Alliance, but the Tauren of the Horde helped her get accepted into the Horde. Now that we know who this lovely queen is, let’s take a look deeper to see if she is the right choice for Warchief.
Lady Sylvanas cares for her people, her people being the Forsaken. It would seem she cares more about them then the other races of the horde, but she knows that she needs the rest of the Horde. She is a ruthless ruler, but she is also contradicting. She did not want mindless scourge, so she gives her people free will. They can come and go as they please.
However, if they disagree with her she will not hesitate to cut them down. When her people wanted to meet with their human loved ones they left behind, she agreed, but then when she felt they were defecting she started killing her own people. She did keep her word to King Anduin and did not harm any of the Alliance that day, but she personally killed Calia Menethil when she saw that she was there.
Quest for immortality
Her people can not procreate, but she wants immortality for them (In the sense that she wants them to keep coming back when they die if they die). They desire to have what they call “The last death”. When they die again, they want to stay dead. This gets brought to her attention and while yet she says she will consider this, I doubt she will actually listen and give her people this. I would not put it past her to end her people all because they don’t want immortality.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Lady Sylvanas. She is beautiful, dangerous, ruthless, and yet will die for her people. She has all the qualities a good leader should have but one. It is “her way or the highway” basically. She does not like anyone to question her, but her people should be able to question her or voice disagreement without fear of persecution. She rules with an iron fist, and she will more than likely not change that.
Did she betray Varian?
If you watched the Alliance version of the cinematic, but not the Horde then yes it does appear that she betrayed Varian. What people miss is she was doing what HER warchief, Vol’jin, ordered her to do. He might not have told her directly to retreat, but he insinuated as much when he told her “Do not let da horde die dis day.” If she stayed and fought, then both the Alliance and the Horde would die that day. They needed a chance to regroup, to step back and evaluate.
One thing about Sylvanas is she is a strategical fighter. She will plan her attacks carefully. In the book, Before the Storm, when Anduin asks her if she betrayed Varian it goes to her thoughts. She regrets leaving Varian, she actually liked him. She even respected him. She keeps to herself about her regrets, after all, we can’t see her in a weakened state.
The right thing
People say that the Alliance would have never done the same thing, but they would have. If King Varian issued the order for them to retreat they would not have thought twice about the Horde. They would have left under the orders of the King because that would have been the right thing to do. Sylvanas did the right thing. What does this have to do with being Warchief? I believe it has everything to do with it. It shows her willingness and understanding to comply with the wishes of a dying Warchief.
She was being a good soldier by doing what her leader told her to do. It is easy to see why the Alliance feels like she betrayed them. Did she, really? If your King told you to do something, would you do it? Her and Vol’jin may have had some misunderstandings, but in the end, he was still her Warchief, her leader. Varian died a hero, but Sylvanas did what she had to in order to save her Warchief or at least try.
Sylvanas is ruthless, dangerous, gorgeous for a Forsaken. She is strong, but yet, damaged. Sylvanas has had a tragic tale and her story is not over yet. She will essentially watch as her world crumbles only to get lifted back up again. She will take down her own people at the very thought of their betrayal, this betrayed queen may be a good one yet.
In my personal opinion, if she succeeds in what she wants to do in tearing down Stormwind only to raise them as Forsaken she is no better then Arthas. She may yet learn to respect Anduin as she did his father. Lady Sylvanas, Warchief of the Horde, is completely different from Anduin, but she has the potential to be a good leader. The only thing she needs to learn at this point is how to listen to her people.
A good leader must listen to their people, even if it is against their better judgment, they may also learn from their people. She is more than just a ruler of the Forsaken, but a Warchief of the Horde. What are your thoughts? Do you think that Lady Sylvanas will be another Arthas or Garrosh?
Do you think she will make a great Warchief? Do you think someone else should have been Warchief instead of her? Let us know in the comments, we’d love to hear your thoughts.
