Week 5 of the Overwatch League has come to an end and, with it, Stage 1. The week’s games determined the standings, as well as who would be playing in the first Stage Playoffs. As of now, the Vancouver Titans are in 1st, and Boston Uprising is in 8th. You can view the rest of the standings here.
There are two map differential ties in the standings that need to be determined before the Playoffs can begin. The first tiebreaker is between Philidelphia Fusion and Toronto Defiant, who are battling it out for third. Both teams have agreed to flip a coin to determine their places in the ranking.
The second tiebreaker is between San Francisco Shock and Seoul Dynasty. Unlike the other tie, these teams will play a match to decide who will rank 6th and 7th. Both teams want to avoid playing New York Excelsior in the first round. The game will be a standard four map-set, and the loser of each map will pick the next map from the Stage 1 pool. This match will not be broadcast live.
Stage 1 Playoffs
Stage Playoffs begin on Thursday, March 21st and run until the 24th. Eight teams will be competing in a bracket for a chance to win $500,000. The games begin on Thursday with a match between Seoul Dynasty and New York Excelsior.
With many strong teams in this bracket, it’s hard to determine who will win the first Stage Playoffs. If I had to take a guess, I’d lean more towards New York Excelsior. This team has been on fire for the entirety of Stage 1, and I doubt they’re going to stop anytime soon. I also want to keep an eye on San Francisco Shock. This team, though not the strongest, has a lot of potential moving forward, and I expect to see some of that in the Playoffs.
Regardless of my predictions, there is a large sum of money and bragging rights on the line in the Stage 1 Playoffs. Teams are going to be giving it their all, and fans are excited for the games to begin.
