Have you ever wanted to play the Chess game Luke and Obi-Wan played in Star Wars: A New Hope? Well, now you can with Hologrid, based on the original concept by VFX artist Phil Tibbett of the Star Wars series.

From award-winning independent game studio HappyGiant and Tippet studio comes the new Augmented Reality game Hologrid: Monster Battle, a game inspired by Star Wars Holochess. Released in time for Star Wars day (May 4th), the game is now available from the Gear VR website and Apple app store, as well as the Google Play Store now offered at a discounted price of $2.99(regularly $4.99)

In addition to the announcement, HappyGiant has announced a three-day HoloGrid virtual “tournament”. Players who participate in the event have a chance to win prizes such as t-shirts and vintage prints signed by VFX artist Phil Tippett, who worked on Star Wars, Robocop, and Jurassic Park. The event will begin at 12:01 AM EST, May 4th and the tournament will end on Sunday, May 7th. The players who have accumulated the most multiplayer victories will be placed in a pool to receive prizes. Players who are interested in participating can sign up here.

Last year, Phil Tippett launched what became a successful Kickstarter campaign to bring his creature designs to life. The campaign received a total of $101,311 USD, which surpassed the original goal of $100k. The game was to be released as a Collectible Card Game, much like Magic: The Gathering and Hearthstone. This was accomplished through mobile technology that takes into account the cards you have placed on the playing field, and animating the monsters you have put into play.
