Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is a role-playing game available on mobile devices, and based on author J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series and universe. The game was developed by Jam City, and released on April 25th of this year. What does year 3 -and beyond- hold for players? Do players finally meet Voldemort?

Before continuing, please note that this article will have spoilers for Year 3 of the game.

What exactly is Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery?

This game allows players to live out their own Hogwarts experience by creating customized characters, and progress through all seven years of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Players have the chance to master all of their favorite skills from the books and movies. You can earn points for your house, and getting into a little trouble along the way.

One of the biggest selling points of the mobile game is the ability to personally interact with some of the most beloved characters from the series, such are Dumbledore, Snape, Bill Weasley, and many, many more. But, have no fear! During a player’s adventure at Hogwarts, they will encounter plenty of fresh faces, too.

The nostalgia aspect of the game leaves many players curious, ‘Will the most famous villain in the Wizarding World show his face?’ The answer to that is rather complicated.

But the biggest question is … ‘Do we every see Voldemort?’

‘He Who Must Not Be Named’ never officially manifests in this plot line, however, he does make an appearance! This game is set in the 1980s which, if you are a huge Harry Potter buff, is right after Voldemort disappears from a failed attempt to kill baby Potter. During this time, he was weak and hiding; meaning, he was not about to use Floo powder to pop into the fireplace of the Gryffindor common room.

What he DOES do though, is come to you in boggart form in Year 3 of the story line. For those that do not know, a person’s boggart is a physical manifestation of whatever scares them the most. To defeat a boggart, you must stare it straight in the face and successfully use the Riddikulus spell. And, most of Year 3 is spent learning how to execute this spell for your inevitable duel with Voldemort.

So what does that mean for beyond Year 3?

But, per Jam City’s most recent update, players are only able to progress to Year 3, Chapter 11. Which means, you are unable to fully finish Year 3 and defeat the infamous Voldemort (and who knows what else!) As of right now, Jam City appears to be consistent in releasing one new chapter every week. This means a couple of things for players. First, given this track record players should be able to complete Year 3 by the end of the month. Also, it is likely going to be a year before players are able to start their 7th Year at Hogwarts.

Year 4 is assumed to bring plenty of playable content for fans, and there is still plenty to do in Years 1-3. In Year 3 alone, players are able to make all their witch and wizarding dreams come true by learning more complex spells, finally take Herbology classes, experience Hogsmeade for the first time, and, our personal favorite, play with Hagrid’s puppy, Fang!

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is available now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
