Gamescom 2018 Nominations
The nominations for various categories of game have been released. A few are obscure. The potential cultural impact of some goes beyond their nomination or their win. This is because, there are quite a few games that appeal to wide audiences. As such, these games appear frequently as nominees.
Best Action Game:
With the superhero craze that has gripped this decade, Spider-Man seemingly has little competition. However, the team behind Dark Souls also created Spider-Man’s competitor: Sekiro. Metro Exodus was also nominated, but the award seems to be centered around the two latter nominees.
In the ring are Destiny 2: Forsaken and State of Decay 2 Daybreak. Destiny has a larger audience due to being on both Microsoft and Sony’s platforms. However, an upset could be immanent.
Best Casual Game:
Life is Strange 2 vs. Team Sonic Racing
Due to its heavy subject matters, Life is Strange is a surprising addition to this category. Nominations are strange, too.
Best Family Game:
Again, Life is Strange 2 has been nominated. Its competition comes from two fronts: Super Mario Party and Lego DC Super-Villains.
Best Puzzle/Skill Game:
Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, a VR game has been nominated. Its competitors are Ori and the Will of the Wisps and Persona 5: Dancing Starlight. Ori has astounding visuals, but Astro Bot being Virtual Reality may carry it to a win.
Best Racing Game:
F1 2018 Vs. Forza Horizon 4 Vs. Team Sonic Racing
I haven’t played a racing game since the early Need for Speed games. I cannot say anything about these games. If my pre-teen logic still applies, the winner of this category will have the coolest cars.
Best Roleplaying Game:
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will be competing with Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3. Fans have lusted after a new addition to the Kingdom Hearts franchise. I see no way it will lose after a 10 year, salivating, wait.
Best Simulation Game:
Anno 1800 and F1 2018 compete against the ever-growing Farming Simulator series.
Best Social/Online Game:
Call of Duty Black Ops 4 will be competing against Dying Light Bad Blood and Rend. The CoD games have been stagnating after the emergence of battle royale style games. Moreover, as a survival game with an end-goal, Rend reminds me very much of Subnautica.
Best Sports Game:
F1 2018 once again finds a place among nominees. It will face off against Fifa 2019 and Pro Evolution Soccer 2019.
Best Strategy Game:
Anno 1800 will likely be a huge disappointment, or a ground-shaking success. Its multiple nominations prove, at the surface, it has wide appeal. However, its fellow nominees in this category are good games in their own right.
Divinity: Original Sin 2 Vs. Anno 1800 Vs. Total War: Three Kingdoms
Best PS4 Game:
Spider-Man Vs. Assasin’s Creed Odyssey Vs. Project Mephisto. The last on the list is merely a working title, and few know what the game actually will be.
Best Xbox One Game:
Ori and the Will of the Wisps competes against Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Forza Horizon 4.
Best Switch Game:
Lego Super-Villians is of course competing. Super-heroes are extremely profitable. Nevertheless, Nintendo characters are cultural heroes in their own right. Thus, Lego and Super Smash Bros Ultimate will likely win over Starlink: Battle for Atlas.
Best PC Game:
Three games will vie for the throne: Anno 1800, Life is Strange 2, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Best Mobile Game:
For this category, the competition will be between Hyperdrome and Shadowgun War Games.
