Doom 2 and Battle Royale
The mod was created by Retrodex Gaming and supports up to 64 players, as well as eight bots. The map is made from the first Doom episode and stitches it into three levels.
The weapons, ammo, and power-ups are spawned randomly across the map. Proving old games can learn new tricks, there is even a shrinking play area reminiscent of Fortnite and PUBG. However, the map is not yet a shined and polished product ready for players.
The modder stated after a recent test, “This is very rough work so far, and more a proof of concept than the final product… I’ve hit a huge hiccup when it comes to getting any more than 32 bots in the map, but that may be due to my severe lack of RAM at the moment!!!”
To use the mod, you’ll need Zandronum 3.0.
A Whisper of Things to Come?
As PUBG and Fortnite infiltrate new markets, we may see more battle royale games appear on consoles. Moreover, the games will not be continuations of the two leaders. Rather, modders may take players’ favorite games and meld them to fit the current gaming trends. New life could be breathed into old games from these mods. After all, mods have kept Skyrim relevant longer than its shipped content could have.
The idea of modding old games to fit cultural game modes such as battle royale is an exciting one. There has been an outcry for the preservation of old games, especially after the forced closure of many emulation sites. New content may draw interest to old games. However, the modding of old games is nothing new and it may be that battle royale mods retreat into obscurity.
