Marvel legend Stan Lee has a tribute in World of Warcraft.
Stan Lee, the face of Marvel Comics for over 50 years, sadly passed away last November. Keeping in line with including references to celebrities in their games, Blizzard added an NPC resembling the Marvel Comics legend in the latest Patch 8.1.5 PTR build. The NPC, known as Stanley, can be found in Stormwind Keep.
There are also two other Stanley NPCs roaming around Azeroth, but their locations are unknown as of this writing. It is rumored that the Horde-dressed Stanley may be located in Orgrimmar. However, the location of the neutral Stanley may be a mystery altogether.
It seems that the staff at Blizzard are huge fans of Lee’s work as there are three different NPC models for him in the game. It is unknown what role the three Stanleys might play in the game other than just a tribute. This has raised speculation among World of Warcraft players. Some fans have even suggested that Stanley become important in the lore; one fan even suggested that Stanley should play a role as the “maker of this universe.”
Lee had been active in comics for over 75 years, starting in 1939 at Timely Comics (later Marvel Comics). Lee became an interim editor at only 19 years old and became a publisher himself by 1972. He created Spider-Man, the X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and numerous other characters during his 75-year career. His wife, Joan, died in 2017. Lee also made cameos in various Marvel movies, including every installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe from 2008’s Iron Man to 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
