This issue is not included in other comic reviews this week because it has far-reaching potential for the Avengers.

The newest Avengers team gathers due to the threat of the Final Host, a group of lethal Celestials, which is augmented by Loki’s involvement. In Avengers #10, new groups are rising in different territories as potential challengers.

DEFENDERS OF THE DEEP

The first group is the Defenders of the Deep. They debut in issue #9 was quite a statement since their leader, Namor, the Sub-Mariner, held of the entire Avengers team by himself.  Namor comprised the Defenders of the Deep of anti-heroes and villains including Andromeda, Orka, Tigershark, and King Crab. They are not the flashiest group. However, having Namor lead them and calling the oceans their territory means they have a lot of power and the most real estate on the planet.

THE WINTER GUARD

Meanwhile, the Winter Guard has reformed. The Winter Guard is Soviet Russia’s answer to the Avengers and originally appeared in the Iron Man series sporadically. Most of their original members are gone, although newer characters own the mantles and their membership is increasing. They include Vanguard, the Crimson Dynamo, the Red Widow, and Chernobog.

THE SQUADRON SUPREME

As if that wasn’t enough, America has entered this super-power arms race. Long-time Hulk adversary, General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross has acquired the Government’s own team in the form of the Squadron Supreme. The Squadron debuted in 1971 and they are a thinly-disguised allegory of the Justice League. Hyperion is like Superman.  Nighthawk is like Batman. Speed Demon is like the Flash and so on. More surprisingly, the liaison to the Squadron Supreme is Agent Phil Coulson.

WOLVERINE’S COSMIC POWERS

In addition to all of that, Loki meets a version of Wolverine with the Phoenix Force. I don’t know if this is a time lost version of Wolverine or the current one. Although, this may explain Logan’s new power of “hot” claws.

NEW AVENGER

Finally, the Avengers seem to have a new recruit. In a side story, the Wasp has broken into a Romanian castle infested with vampires. Janet Van Dyne proceeds into the bowels of the castle and into the dungeon. Once there, she offers an Avengers membership to the Daywalker, Blade.

You’re not Wesley Snipes!

There is a lot of chaos on the horizon for the Avengers, that is for sure. However, in one issue, the challengers are lining up. We will have to see if they really are “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.”
