And Here’s Another Battle Royal
Whenever some thinks about Battle Royal gameplay, their mind will almost always go to Fortnite. After all, it is Fortnite that has come to be known as the most popular game in the world. Well, it might be time for a hardy contender to come and challenge that title. Today, developer Respawn Entertainment, by way of Electronic Arts, officially released Apex Legends, the Battle Royal game that takes place in the battle torn world of the Titanfall titles.
The New Trailer Sets the Standard
The trailer for the game was made public earlier today, and it wowed the gaming community. What was shown was a cinematic of several characters fighting over a loot chest, even though they were on the same team. Each individual had their own story, characteristics, and special abilities. This type of individuality is reminiscent of such games as League of Legends and Overwatch.
The banter and humor, along with the excellent gunplay and cinematic action, gave fans of the genre something else to look forward too. Fortnite does not provide intimate details on the characters that you are playing, and seeing as story-based games are still seen as important, this may be a perfect substitute for Epic’s powerhouse title.
What to Expect
As is always the case with new titles, Apex Legends will probably run into server and quality issues during the first few weeks. The game is played on the PC through Origin, EA’s online console version of Steam, the PS4, and Xbox One. The game is free to play, and the graphics are a little more intensive than Fortnite or other shooters, so you will need to be come into the game with a decent PC setup if you are going that route.
The gameplay itself is very fluid. This title is clearly a Titanfall game without titans. The players use a first-person view when navigating the area and hunting down the other squads. The various loot crates contain weapons and armor that can be interchanged and replaced when better gear is found. Each unique “legend” has a special ability, like teleportation or a grappling hook, to give their squads an edge over the enemy.
In my opinion, the best part of the game is the cross talk between squad members. Each member will yell out at the other, telling them when to look out for enemies or when they are reloading. On occasion, they may even crack a joke or two to keep things loose. This little detail adds an extra degree of personality to an already promising title.
Dive Into the Fray
Apex Legends is now available for free download on the platforms I mentioned earlier. Though this game is no where close to being as popular as Fortnite, it’s whimsical and action packed aesthetic may very well be what will tip the scales.
